Manassas Ballet Theatre takes the audience on a journey to romantic France in its third program of the 2013-2014 season, “A Night At The Paris Opera and More!” March 8, 7:30 p.m. and March 9, 3: p.m. at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas.
“It’s been a stellar season thus far for Manassas Ballet Theatre. Not only has the company received a National Endowment for the Arts grant for it’s commitment to bringing professional ballet performances to area students, but one of it’s own company members, Will Smith, won a Virginia Commission of the Arts grant for choreography. Smith will debut his new piece, “Laboro,” as part of “A Night at the Paris Opera and More!” Manassas Ballet spokesperson Beth Rose Luna said.
The program’s first act will consist of both selected music and ballet pieces from the opera “Faust” accompanied by vocalist Mark Luna. Additionally, during Smith’s “Laboro” dancers share the stage with Washington, D.C. artist Katya Krupko, who will be painting during the performance.
“A Night at the Paris Opera and More” also features company dancer Anastasia Welsh’s piece “Un Giorno di Primavera,” danced to the music of Vivaldi.
The second act brings The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo’s colorful and energetic “Gaite Parisienne” to the stage, which debuted in 1938 and includes the famous can-can. Each performance is accompanied by the Manassas Ballet Theatre Orchestra.
