Weekend Beat: Enjoy Fall from Oktoberfest to Shocktober

Posted

This weekend you don't have to go far to find fun for the family. Buy arts and crafts from your neighboring business men and women at Patriot High School, or cross Rt. 29 to be transported into a German style village. Then, head to Leesburg for a fright! It's all within reach this Autumn weekend.

Craft Day, Patriot High School: The Patriot High School PTSA is holding their 2nd Annual Craft/Vendor Fair from 10 am to 3 pm. Last year's inaugural event was a huge success with 30 vendors from the local community, displaying their products and services, while several hundred community members took advantage of early holiday shopping.

This year's event has shaped up to be even larger, with 34 vendors scheduled to attend. A wide variety of direct sales vendors will have their products and catalogs on display as well as a number of handmade crafts, pottery, jewelry, pet accessories and spa items to make your early holiday shopping a success. In addition to our vendors, Patriot High Schools' Culinary Program will be selling gourmet hot chocolate and walking tacos, while members of our Patriot Orchestra will perform for the crowd. The Vendor event will take place inside the school in Commons Areas I & II. Shoppers can enter through Door 26, on the side of the building facing the football field.

Haymarket Oktoberfest: “Spend a Day in Haymarket” in cooperation with the Town of Haymarket presents the 2nd Annual Oktoberfest from noon until 4 pm, complete with German fare, live music and vendors. The event will take place on Haymarket’s main thoroughfare, Washington Street, which will be closed off to automotive traffic. Kids and adults are invited to don their best German outfits and costumes, and the winner of the costume contest receives a meal for a party of six at a local Haymarket restaurant. See event page for more information.

Shocktober Haunted Manor: Friday, Saturday and Sunday night throughout the month of October, get a thrill from a real fright at an interactive haunted manor, where the demons and ghouls haunt Paxton Manor in Leesburg from beyond the grave. Built in the late 1800s, Paxton Manor is filled with large rooms and dark halls run by the mysterious Mrs. Scarlet. Over the years many strange and horrific events have taken place in the rooms, trapping restless souls to haunt the halls.

The haunted manor exhibit features scary twists and turns and actors that pop-out to scare the guests. As a result, it is PG13, but the operators will leave it up to the parenst as to what level of fright, they believe their children can handle. Proceeds from the haunted Manor benefit Arc and Paxton Campus various nonprofits, including ALLY, Aurora School and Maggie’s Closet, all charities and nonprofits benefitting children. Tickets are $5-30, depending on what attraction in Shocktober you choose to attend. Visit http://www.shocktober.org/ to learn more or purchase tickets.
