In an effort to enhance their coverage of western Prince William communities, the publisher of Bristow Beat announced that the daily news site will produce several podcasts.
A podcast is a digital audio file, which listeners can download and listen on their computers or mobile device.
“With the increasing popularity of podcasts as a viable news delivery and entertainment platform, we are developing local digital programming that we plan to debut in the coming months,” Publisher Jason Shaw said.
Podcasts such as NPR's "This Amerian Life" and the murder investigation "Serial" have developed huge followings of loyal fans.
Bristow Beat’s first continuing show will be “From Here to Here” and will feature documentary-stye, journalistic content about local news, issues and people.
The podcast will be produced bi-weekly.
“We’re committed to delivering the same kind of compelling content that our readers have come to expect from Bristow Beat,” Shaw said. “There’s opportunity to dig deeper into the issues that affect residents,” he said.
Shaw explained that Bristow Beat produces a community news product and this is an attempt to capitalize on the interactive nature of digital media.
“Podcasts have been around for over a decade; just now we are seeing the numbers of people downloading podcasts skyrocket.”
According to Edison Research, who has been continuously researching podcasting since 2005, monthly audio podcast consumption grew from approximately 39 million monthly users in 2014 to approximately 46 million in 2015.
“Our concept is relatively new; we haven’t really seen the proliferation of ‘hyperlocal podcasting,” he said. “We are confident that once listeners sample the show, they will become engaged.”
While he offered no details about the content, Shaw said a second podcast is also in development.
“Concurrently, we are planning our second program, which will be a lifestyle program," he said.
Ultimately, Shaw said he will solicit sponsors for the programs.
"It's a great opportunity for local businesses to connect to the community," he said. "The format gives us the ability to promote their products and services in very creative ways."
