Husband and wife team Kevin and Michelle Toms opened Toms Orthodontics and Endodontics at Bristow Commons, this spring. This is the first endodontic practice to open in Bristow.

Michelle Toms said there is a lot of misunderstanding about endodontics, the dental practice that specializes in root canals, but like any other medical doctor, she is there to alleviate pain and injury.

A root canal is necessary dental procedure when the nerve tissue of a tooth gets infected, when you Get More Info, you will learn how sometimes it can occur from a cavity, other times from a trauma, such as a sports injury and sometimes because a person grinds their teeth.

A good endodontist will clean out the nerve tissue in order to take people out of pain and resolve the infraction, explained Dr. Michelle.

Dr. Toms said people think of root canal doctors as wanting to cause pain, when in reality they alleviate pain and suffering through prevention of further nerve damage.

And, nothing makes Leawood cosmetic dentists happier than when they prevents their clients from experiencing any pain with the procedure, or in the future, because the issue has been properly addressed.

However, Dr. Michelle does recognize that people have a lot of feel and anxiety around dental work, but she believes most of has been built up on their minds.

Mainly, she said she “tries to put people at ease.”

Generally, people come into her office anxious about the procedure. One way to combat the anxiety is to find out more about the procedure itself. Afterwards, they tend to tell her “Wow, that’s all that is.”

They are relieved by the experience. “Usually, it’s just kind of boring,” Dr. Michelle said.

Yet, she does believe the right doctor can help the patient have a smooth experience.

“People said I have a really good bedside manner,” she said, noting she is soft-spoken, and will explain to the patient everything she is going to do.

She believes this helps make her patients more comfortable.

She also touts the benefits of making an appointment with an endodontist, rather than having a general dentist address a root canal issue, which dentists sometimes suggest.

First of all, many people do not realize that dental insurance pay for a endodontal care with a endodontist.

Endodontists are specialists. They study endodontistry in dental school for an additional two years, saying the training definitely makes a difference, and they perform root canals routinely.

“It’s all I do,” Dr. Toms said.

Endodontists follow all the necessary guidelines, and thus, she believes patients are more likely to have a successful outcome the first time.

Dr. Michelle Toms also has specialized tools for root canals that most general dental offices do not. One such tool is a high-powered cone microscope, called CT or Computed Tomography; it produces 3D images of the tooth.

“[It is] so I can see all the anatomical details, and visualize a crack in the tooth,” she said. “I can see what is wrong, so I can make it better.”

Dr. Michelle works with both children and adults.

“Kids are actually better than adults most of the time,” she said, in the sense that they are less anxious around dentists, “especially, if they haven’t had a bad dental experience before,” she said.

And, Children often  need endodontists more than adults do, because they are more likely to get big cavities in their molers and because they experience more sports related accidents, including falls from bikes or running.

Dr. Michelle Toms has worked in dental offices in Northern Virginia. She and her husband, Kevin, decided to start their own specialized dental practice together in Bristow to be close to their children, as they live in Prince William County.

Dr. Kevin Toms works within the same practice as an orthodontist, which specialize in braces and other aligners to straighten teeth and align bites.

Toms Orthodontics and Endodontics is now accepting new patients, and accepts most dental plans.

Toms Orthodontics and Endodontics is located at 9070 Devlin Road # 140 within Bristow Commons. Call them at 703-334-0018, or visit their website Tomssmiles.com.
