Project Mend-A-House Holds Kevin English Memorial Golf Tournament

This weekend readers can help a local charity, Project Mend-A-House, while also participating in one of Western Prince William's favorite outdoor activities, golfing.

Project Mend-A-House, along with community supporters and volunteers, is holding its Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Bristow Manor Golf Club on Sat. April 26. Registration is at 11:30 a.m. to 12 with shotgun at 1 p.m. Registration in $125 per person or $450 per team.

Project Mend-A-House is a local nonprofit organization, with over twenty-five years of service to the communities of Prince William, Manassas and Manassas Park. The organization helps seniors and people with disabilities have increased mobility, accessibility and safety within their homes. Last year alone they helped more than 143 clients with 450 projects.

“A lot of what we do is accessibility and safety modifications to homes- wheelchair ramps and bathroom modifications --so that they can stay in their homes, rather than having to move out to assisted living,” said Golf Tournament and Committee Chair Rich Beamer.

This year the tournament has been renamed the Kevin English Memorial Golf Tournament in memory of English, who passed away in January of this year. English was a former Golf Tournament Committee Chair, and the inaugural founder of the tournament. He had alsupported PMAH for the last ten years.

In his honor Virginia Delegate Luke Turian of the Dumfries District, a friend and political colleague of English’s, has been invited to serve as Honorary Chairman. Turian will present a proclamation in honor of English to his family.

Because the event is for a good cause, the PMAH Tournament Committee has made the game a user-friendly Captain’s Choice or scramble. This means teams play only their best drives, and players do not have to be the next Tiger Woods to enjoy their time on the course.

“It’s a good way for people who don’t play a lot of golf or are even beginners to play and have fun. If they make one good shot or put, they contributed,” Beamer said.

The event will also offer other ways to contribute to the cause, with auctions, raffles and 50/50s. A buffet style barbeque at the Bristow Manor Country is included.

Beamer has been pleased with the registration for the event thus far. Last year with 50 attendees, they rose close to $5,000. This year they have already exceeded their goal of 80 participants, and Beamer expects they will raise approximately $10,000, doubling last years numbers.

Beamer thanked the staff of Bristow Manor Golf Club for being very accommodating to his organization, and said they plan on continuing to use the venue for future events.

Interested players can still register for the event online at www.pmahweb.org, call 703-792-7663, email projectmendahouse@msn.com or register in person on the day of the event.
