Haymarket Christmas Festival Cancelled Saturday Due to Impending Snow, Ice

With a 90 percent chance of snow and sleet this Saturday, one Prince William holiday parade will be cancelled or postponed this weekend, while another will proceed as planned.

According to the Nation Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Saturday’s forecast for the Bristow area calls for snow before 2 p.m., rain between 2-5 p.m. and then rain and sleet after 5 p.m. All the rain, snow and sleet could cause icy conditions on the road and also mushy slosh along with temperatures between 33° and 33°F.

The Haymarket Christmas Festival, Parade and Tree Lighting will be cancelled this Saturday with a snow date pending.

“Due to the weather and resulting safety issues we have no choice but to cancel the holiday party event,” read an announcement on the Haymarketfun.com website.

The event, sponsored by the Spend a Day in Haymarket organization, will likely be rescheduled for a weekday evening next week the announcement continued to say.

Kim Kennedy Ingalls, Director of Spend a Day in Haymarket, said the parade floats have lights, making them ideal for a parade at dusk.

Should the Christmas parade festival be rescheduled, Bristow Beat will follow up to see which of the previous planned festivities, such as the kids area, beer garden and children's music stage will be included.

Meanwhile, members of the Nokesville Business Association have decided to go ahead with their plans for the parade, and other Christmas festivities scheduled for late Saturday afternoon and evening.

Barbara Bowling, an executive member of the Nokesville Business Association said, “The parade will go on rain or shine unless it’s icy.”

The Nokesville Parade is scheduled for 4 p.m. (road closes at 3:45 p.m.) It will begin at Nokesville Elementary School on Fitzwater Drive and continue west towards Nokes Street.

Following the parade, there will be carriage rides and tree lighting at Square Market. Then, the Nokesville Church of the Brethren will host a live nativity outside their church and a holiday dinner ($5 per adults and children 6 and older) in the church’s Fellowship room.

The Nokesville Business Association will keep in close contact with Prince William Police who will advise if the parade will need to be called on the account of weather or road conditions.

Both holiday events were donating goods to charity. Those attending the Nokesville holiday dinner are asked to bring canned goods that will go towards people in need at SERVE and BARN.

Bristow Beat will keep readers abreast of any cancellations or changes.
