The parents of Chris Yung, the Prince William Officer who died in the line of duty on Dec. 31, 2012, decorated a memorial at Sowder Village Square on Nokesville Road in Manassas Sunday afternoon.

The Christmas decorations adorn the site of Officer Yung’s police motorcycle accident, a site that is already memorialized with a sign.

Officer Yung, who was 35 at the time of his death, was beloved by the community and fellow officers.

Chris's father, Edward Yung, said he felt decorating the memorial was important gesture that he and his wife wanted to do to honor the memory of their son.

“It will be our second Christmas without him,” Yung said.

The Yungs decorated the memorial site with a traditional Christmas wreath, a Christian cross, flowers, Prince William Police badges and a challenge coin that features Chris’s photo, an American and police flag. They also included a wrapped gift box at the base of the sign post. Mr. Yung joked that the box is empty, so no one should bother to try and steal it.

At the time of the interview, Yung was busy lighting the memorial with solar Christmas lights, saying it will, hopefully, light up at night.

The sign that memorializes Chris Yung also serves as a warning for motorists to slow down. The sign that memorializes Chris Yung also serves as a warning for motorists to slow down.

Chris’ mother, Jennifer Yung, said that the couple was doing this, mostly because they miss their son.

Mr. Yung agreed, saying they both miss him tremendously. Then, displaying some of Chris’ characteristic good spirit, he added. “We hope he’s having fun in heaven. I’m sure that he is.”
