As students prepare for the start of a new school year, the Prince William County Republican Committee and Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (VA-10) conducted a back-to-school supply drive to benefit some of the county’s neediest students.

The committee collected a large amount of supplies and delivered them Wednesday to Parkside Middle School and Sinclair Elementary School, both in Manassas.

“I thank the Prince William County Republican Committee for putting this important back-to-school supply drive together and helping the students of Prince William County grow academically,” said Congresswoman Comstock. “It was an honor to join the initiative. These supplies will help low-income families, so every child has the tools for success.”

This is the third year that local Republicans have collected supplies for Title 1 schools or schools with a high population of low-income students. They donated to Occoquan Elementary School and Rippon Middle School in 2015, and Vaughn Elementary School and Fred Lynn Middle School in 2014.

“The Prince William Republicans are grateful to be able to serve the community throughout the year through various projects and activities,” said GOP Chairwoman Dottie Miller. “This school supply drive is a great way for us to use private sector resources to support education, because these students will be Prince William’s leaders of tomorrow.”

Items collected included backpacks, pens, no. 2 pencils, water-based markers, glue sticks, three-ring binders, pocket folders and loose-leaf notebook paper.

Vice Chairman D.J. Jordan noted that in an affluent county such as Prince William it is easy to forget there are many families who are struggling just  to make it, but there are many.

“About 38 percent of our nearly 90,000 students are considered economically disadvantaged. In order to help every child have the opportunity to succeed in Prince William, we must support education, because it is the best way out of poverty," Jordan said.

Gainesville Supervisor Pete Candland noted the great generosity of the people of Prince William County explaining that they were flooded with an abundance of supplies this year.

Alyson Satterwhite, Gainesville's school board member, thanked everyone who donated. “You are making a real difference in the life of a child and giving them a boost on their road to academic success," she said.

The Prince William Republican Committee has served the community through projects like this school supply drive for several years, having engaged in approximately ten service opportunities per year.

Service projects have included: a fashion show to benefit the B.A.R.N Transitional Housing charity in Bristow, led by the Bull Run Republican Women’s Club; a cold weather gasoline tank and coat collection for unsheltered homeless in Woodbridge; a meal for residents of the ACTS Homeless Shelter in Dumfries; and a Veterans and Military Appreciation Dinner, provided by the Prince William Republican Women’s Club, just to name a few.

The Prince William Republicans invite any and all resident to participate in the Committee’s Community Service Initiatives no matter their political affiliation. Those wanting to participated in the the Republican’s community service activities can contact the committee at 703-680-7388.
