Prince William County Schools is advertising notice of a public hearing to appoint an acting Prince William County School Board member to represent the Brentsville District.

The individual the school board selects will serve as Brentsville representative Gil Trenum's replacement until he returns from his deployment as a member of the Naval Reserve.

While Trenum had recommended three names of residents he felt were appropriate, the school board sought advice from Attorney General Mark Herring's office.

However, a legal opinion from the Office of the Virginia Attorney General stated that the position should be made open to any resident of the Brentsville District and the school board will then choose the replacement from among those who applied.

Prince William County Schools is now requesting that any person interested in being the acting Brentsville School Board representative submit an application to the Clerk of the School Board no later than 4:30 p.m., Aug. 24.

Applications are available on the pwcs.edu website or the Kelly Leadership Center.

Along with the application, PWCS is requiring candidates submit a resume that includes education information, work and other experience, home address and a statement explaining the reason the candidate wants the position.

A special public hearing to discuss the Acting Brentsville School Board member position will be held September 7 at 7 p.m. at the Kelly Center. Speakers can sign up with the clerk via email, telephone, or in person from 6-6:55 p.m. that evening.

Speaker will have three minutes to comment and applicants will have five minutes. Only those names considered at the public hearing will be eligible for the appointment.

The vote on the interim appointment will be held the regular school board meeting, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.

Those wanting additional information should contact the school board office at 703-791-8709.
