Prince William County Schools has announced the applicants for the Brentsville school board interim member position. They are Christopher Park, Douglas Hunter Porterfield, Tara Ann Tadlock, JerMonica Boose-Davis and Shawn L. Brann. An interim representative is needed to fill the seat since Brentsville representative Gil Trenum, an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve, has been ordered to return to active duty in Djibouti, Africa for approximately one year. Trenum is expected to resume is term at the start of the 2017-18 school year.

In his absence, the school board will choose the newest member as was recommended by an attorney working for the Office of the Virginia Attorney General. Among the people whom Trenum recommended for the position are Christopher Park and Shaw L. Brann. Both have served on his budget committee. Citizens will get a chance to first meet the applicants and also make their voice heard concerning the potential board member at a public hearing, which is scheduled for Wednesday, September 7 at 7 p.m., and will be held at the Kelley Leadership Center, 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas. According to PWCS, each speaker will be provided up to three minutes to make comments; whereas applicants will receive five minutes. Only those who names are considered at the public hearing will be eligible for the appointment. A regular school board meeting will follow the public hearing. People who would like to sign up for comments can do so in person up to 10-minutes before the start of the public hearing, or by contacting the school board office at 703-791-8709. The school board will vote on the interim appointment at its September 21 meeting. The majority of the information in this article was provided by Prince William County Schools.
