Battlefield Graduates Receive STEM Scholarships from SPARK

SPARK, the Education Foundation for Prince William County Public Schools, honored three Battlefield High School graduates for their achievements in science, technology, engineering and math.

The organization announced that Katherine Lash, Kayla Townsend and Aaron Guo were among the 2013 winners of the Dr. Edward L. Kelly Memorial Scholarship and the Micron Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) Scholarships.

“This year we received several impressive applications, making the selection process more difficult than ever before,” said Sharon Henry, executive director of SPARK.

Katherine Lash won the $1,000 Dr. Edward L. Kelly Memorial Scholarship, which is intended for a graduating high school senior who intends to pursue a career in teaching. The scholarship was named in honor of Edward L. Kelly, who served as superintendent of schools for 18 years.

The other two county winners of the scholarship were Allison Notarantonio of  Osbourn Park High School and Samantha Wallace of Stonewall Jackson High School.

Kayla Townsend was one of three graduating seniors in the county who received the Micron STEM and CTE Scholarships, which includes three $2,000 scholarships given to graduating seniors who intend to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and math and one $1,500 scholarship given to a graduating senior pursuing a professional certification in the STEM field.

Sarah Karalus of Osbourn Park High School and Jason Ksanznak of Potomac High School were also recipients of the awards.

Aaron Guo received $2,000 as the winner of the Lockheed Martin and Micron Scholarship, which was given to two graduating seniors to pursue careers in the STEM field. Chandler King of Osbourn Park High School was the other recipient.
