County Staff, Supervisor Initiate Study of Patriot H.S. Traffic

Daily morning traffic to Patriot High School, typically includes delays on Kettle Run Road, Vint Hill Road and Sudley Manor Drive.

Brentsville Supervisor Wally S. Covington III, Patriot High School staff, School Transportation and Safety staff in addition to County Transportation (PWCDOT) representatives met Feb. 4 to address the situation and offer suggestions on how to improve the flow of traffic.

“The primary concern is the morning traffic to the school and the delays associated with the buses, driving students and parents dropping off their children,” Covington said in a release.

According to school officials, the student parking lot is approximately 30 percent under capacity and they hope that once more passes are sold, student driver traffic will increase.

In an effort to control the flow of traffic, the high school administration has scheduled buses to minimize their impact on traffic and encourages parents to use the far entrance, which would decrease the line of cars.

Furthermore, PWCDOT conducted a field review of the traffic situation and offered school officials two potential solutions, which are:

  • Constructing an additional entrance to the student parking lot, which would remove student drivers from the overcrowded traffic flow.

  • Extending the right turn lane on eastbound Vint Hill Road 500 feet up to Sudley Manor Drive, which would only be effective until the right turn lane fills.

“Both of the suggestions would require funding, design and construction,” Covington said.
