Day Care Inspections: Montessori of Gainesville - Casa dei Bambini

The Virginia Department of Social Services inspected the licensed child day care center, Montessori of Gainesville - Casa dei Bambini, located at 14130 Glenkirk Road in Gainesville on Oct. 21, 2012. The agency cited the facility with four violations.

Virginia Department of Social Services Comments:

Forty-Three children were in care during the inspection,The age range of the children was from 23 months to four years old. Children were waking up from rest and eating snack. Four staff are current in MAT and all staff are current in Daily Health observation. Playground was not inspected due to rain. Risk ratings were discussed. Inspection time 2:00-4:20 p.m.

Violations

Standard #: 22VAC15-30-430-F

Description: Based on observation of the rest rooms the staff failed to have children in actual sight and sound supervision. Evidence: On the walk thru of the building the LI observed two children in the rest room between rooms 3 and 4 children were playing for one minute LI informed staff in both rooms and the children were moved to a classroom.

Action to be Taken: Remind all staff to supervise all children when using the rest rooms.

Standard #: 22VAC15-30-575-A

Description:  Based on observation of a diaper change the staff failed to wash their hands between diaper changes. Evidence: One staff in room Six did not wash their hands after each diaper change.

Action to be Taken: Remind the staff on diaper changing procedures and I will send an e-mail to all staff.

Standard #: 22VAC15-30-575-B

Description:  Based on observation of a diaper change staff failed to use a foot operated diaper pail. Evidence The staff used their hands to open the diaper pail and also allowed the children to open the pail with their hands.

Action to be Taken: I will remind all staff on diapering procedures and I will send an e-mail to the staff.

Standard #: 22VAC15-30-580-A

Description:  Based on review of medication center failed to have current medication authorizations. Evidence: Two medication authorizations expired on 9/13/12 for child A.

Action to be Taken: I will have the parent fill out a new medication authorization.

The Virginia Department of Social Services inspects all licensed child welfare agencies at least twice a year, with at least one unannounced inspection each year.

“In order to determine continued compliance with standards during the effective dates of the license, the department’s licensing representative will make announced and unannounced inspections of the facility or agency during the hours of its operation,” the agency states on their website. “The licensee is responsible for correcting any areas of noncompliance found during renewal or monitoring inspections.”

VDSS cautions that a compliance history is in no way a rating for a facility and online compliance reports do not include consideration that some information regarding “adverse actions” may be the subject of pending appeals.

According to the agency, “Through the administration of the licensing program, the Department of Social Services assumes responsibility to ensure that licensed facilities and agencies provide children and adults with at least a minimum level of care in accordance with regulations prescribed by the State Board of Social Services and Child Day-Care Council.”
