New Law Requires Va.Teachers, Students to Learn CPR

Posted

One of a multitude of new laws that went into effect July 1 in Virginia will mandate that new and renewing teachers, and eventually students, learn CPR and first aid.

"Gwyneth’s Law" would require CPR and emergency first aid training for more of the school community.

The law is named for the 12-year-old Rock Hill, Va., girl who did not receive any immediate emergency response after collapsing at school; her heart had stopped and she wasn't breathing. She died two months later.

Starting in the 2016-2017 school year, the Virginia Board of Education will make CPR training a graduation requirement.

In the coming months, the VBOE and the state health department will develop guidelines to implement the new law.

Bus drivers would also need to be certified as well under the new mandate.

The full text of the law can be found here.
