PWCS Considers ‘AP Scholars’ for 13th High School Specialty

The Prince William County School Board will listen to a presentation Jan. 7 from the superintendent’s staff asking members to consider the Advanced Placement Scholars Program as the specialty program for the 13th county high school planned for construction in Bristow.

The high school site, which is currently attached to the proposed Stone Haven development, would be located near Wellington and Linton Hall roads if approved by the Board of County Supschoolbuservisors later this month.

Staff reports that adoption of the program would require no major alterations to the building plan to accommodate the program.

According to presentation documents, the program will enable students to customize their courses of study and work independently.

“The AP Scholars, with the inclusion of brand new Capstone courses, allows students to do independent research in areas of interest,” they said.

The College Board says Capstone courses, currently offered at Osbourn Park High School and considered for Woodbridge and Patriot High Schools next year, provide students with rigorous college-level study that is divided into seminar and mentored research components. More information about the program is located here.

These courses resulted from a partnership between the College Board and Cambridge International Exams. Areas of study could include: English; history and social sciences; math and computer science; science and world language.

Board members will vote on the proposed specialty program at a future meeting.
