UPDATED: PWCS Extends Report Cards, Grade Deadlines; Teacher Worksday Still Monday

To accommodate possible bus delays, in unplowed or unpaved areas Prince William County Schools will open will open two hours late.

In a statement, Prince William County Schools Director, Communications Services Phil Kavits announced that the School Division will release report cards Feb. 6 due to recent weather-related closings, while building principals will establish deadlines for the submission of grades.

"The delay will give teachers additional time to complete student assessments and submit grade reports, Kavits said. "Principals will establish deadlines appropriate to the new schedule."

Principals will soon receive additional guidance from associate superintendents.

"Teachers are requested to ensure that grades submitted are as final as possible to allow for accurate calculation of mid-year GPA," he said. "The revised timeline will enable the timely communication of midyear reports for consideration by colleges and programs. "

Furthermore, students will enjoy another day off as the School Division will proceed with the planned Jan. 27 teacher work day and planned half-day elementary conferences Jan. 28.

PWCS is also considering how to best deal with the remaining number of "snow days" are left to be employed in case of more weather-related closings.

"PWCS is currently exploring options for making up time, if needed, to meet the minimum instructional hours required by the Commonwealth of Virginia," Kavits said. "As of Jan. 23, PWCS has approximately 3.6 hours remaining under the current approved school calendar before additional losses of instructional time create any risk of falling below state minimums."
