Prince William County School Board voted to give students and staff off March 1, the day of the presidential primaries.

At the request of the Prince William Electoral Board, Brentsville school board member Gil Trenum proposed a motion to not hold school on the day of the primary.

We did receive a letter - the board received a letter - from the Prince William County Electoral Board, requesting this. Typically, we closed for presidential elections in November, and primaries, we typically don’t. However, this year it is a presidential primary. Both parties have contested elections, and there’s lots and lots of activity.

Trenum noted that the Electoral Board is expecting 30 to 40 percent of registered voters to show up at the polls.

Chairman Ryan Sawyers said he is concerned about parking, especially at the elementary schools where there are few unoccupied spaces during the school day. He said, having school could discourage people from voting.

The vote was unanimous among all school board members who were present at the Jan. 20 meeting. Loree Williams, the Woodbridge representative was absent.

Virginia holds its primary on Mar. 1, "Super Tuesday" along with 15 other states.
