VHSL Names Patriot High School Students Finalists for State Journalism Awards

The Virginia High School League announced on Monday the finalists for the 2012 individual Writing/Photo/Design Contest. Among those recognized were the published works of several Patriot High School journalism students.

As the VHSL is the official governing body for high school athletics and academic activities in the Commonwealth of Virginia, these honors are considered the equivalent of state championships.

The work of these students was featured in Patriot High School’s student newspaper, The Charge.

In the Group AAA Newspaper Category, Brett Warren is a finalist in the Straight News/News Feature category for his piece “Teachers Protest Salary Structure.” Warren with Annamaria Bassi are also recognized for their editorial, “Treating Students Like Babies.”

In the Photo: News/Feature Category, Brandon Iqbal and Abby Boucher are finalists for their photo “Days of Summer.” Rachel Walsh’s feature, “A Teacher’s Journey from Poverty,” was recognized in the Feature: Human Interest/Personality category.

The Charge also featured two finalists in the Advertising Category: Lindsey Chiles for her ad for the Social Butterfly and Konnor Fulk for his ad for Lawrence J. Finkel Dermatologist.

According to VHSL, contest entries are assessed by active and/or retired VHSL activities advisers, who narrow down statewide entries to the top five submissions per category, which ultimately serve as the contest finalists. In the second phase of judging, students’ work is ranked first, second, third place or honorable mention.

Winners will be announced at the VHSL Regional Publications Championships in October, where students will be presented with certificates.
