Nokesville Day is a local tradition. Every year Nokesville residents and those from surrounding areas gather for a parade, local food from vendors and fun for adults and children alike. It is a day to celebrate community, community service, small local businesses and friendly people. And for those who attend year after year, it is an indicator that summer is just around the corner.

Nokesville Day 2012 is this Saturda,y May 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and like always it will be held on Fitzwater Drive in downtown Nokesville. It is sponsored by the Nokesville-Bristow Ruritans; however, it is also made possible through the support and participation of multiple local businesses and organizations.

According to Ken Hinkle of the Nokesville-Bristow Ruritans, 5-7,000 people are expected to attend.

This year, the festivities and vendors have been moved east of the railroad tracks on Fitzwater Drive for the safety of the community members. This move also allows for the road to close during the event.

Gil Trenum, Brentsville District School Board Representative, will serve as Grand Marshall, ushering in the annual parade, which runs down Fitzwater Drive and ends on Nokes Street. The parade begins at 11 a.m.

Featured in the parade will be Dona Swanson, the Nokesville Day Citizen of the Year; Just 4 Today Automotive, the Nokesville Business of the Year, also Robert Powell and Allen Thomas, who are 2012’s Nokesville-Bristow Ruritans of the Year.

For entertainment, The DC Transit Band and Northern Virginia's own Spellbound Band will perform on the ground of Nokesville Elementary.

For children there are balloon animals and hats, exotic animals, moon bounces and various other activities including face painting spread throughout the parade route.

There will also be no shortage of food Concession stands include a wide variety from local restaurants and caterers such as Blue Dog BBQ, Chuckwagon Restaurant, Whysong Ice Cream Truck, Clakrell- Tractor Ice Cream, Hau Lani Hawaiian Shaved Ice and How’s It Pop’n Kettle Corn. The Nokesville Ruritans, Nokesville Lions Club and Nokesville Brethren Church will also be selling food

In addition there will be bake sales and handcrafts. As seventy applications have been submitted for vendors, there should be no shortage of things to do, see, buy or eat.

Community Service organizatios participating in the event include the Marsteller Ruri-Teens, Cedar Point Elementary Rudy Youth and T. Clay Wood Elementary Rudy Youth.

As May 19 is also National Ruritans Founders Day, Ruritans across the country are participating in a food drive to support local food pantries. There will be various collection points and the Ruritans would appreciate any donations of nonperishable food items attendees could bring with them to the event.

Nokesville Day will proceed rain or shine.
