UPDATE: President Obama to Speak at Centreville High School, Mobilize the Middle Class

Posted

As part of an effort to mobilize Democrats and Independents in Northern Virginia, President Obama will visit Centreville High School in Clifton this Saturday.

The event, which takes place in the school auditorium, will be small and intimate. Tickets are free, and were distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis on July 12.

President Obama will be spending his entire weekend in the Commonwealth with more speaking engagements planned in Richmond, Roanoke and Virginia Beach. The speaking engagements, entitled "A Vision for Virginia's Middle Class Events" are part of a larger effort to energize Virginia voters in the decidedly purple state, which Obama won by a margin of 6.3 votes in 2008.

According to a press released issued by Obama for America, "(The President) will discuss the choice in this election between two fundamentally different visions of how to grow the economy, create middle-class jobs and pay down the debt.  The President believes the only way to build an economy meant to last is to build it from the middle out, not the top down. "

While the emphasis will be on jobs, the economy and relief for the middle class, the President also plans to address education, energy and infrastructure as avenues for economic growth. According to the press release, the President further intends to speak on the impact of the middle class tax cuts he has initiated over the past four years.

Obama's visit to the state coincides with his campaign’s Voter Registration Week of Action, whereby national volunteers meet in Washington D.C. before traveling through Northern Virginia to register new votes.

Prince William Democratic Party Chair Harry Wiggins, who spoke with Bristow Beat after Michelle Obama visited Dale City in the spring, said he believes the President Obama has a good chance of winning Virginia again in November, and even Prince William County.

Although the area appears heavily Republican, Wiggins said that more people tend to vote in presidential elections and those some-time voters will bode well for Obama.

Democrats in the area have been mobilizing by signing up more new voters, including many college age voters. Wiggins said Prince William Democrats are reaching out to the young, the old, women, African American and Latino voters. This year they are also reaching out to teachers and other county employees.
