Police Officer Recognized for Compassion Following Nokesville Suicide

Posted
Lieutenant Shawn Peak received prestigious recognition from the Prince William County Police Department for his compassion in assisting the wife of a man who committed suicide in Nokesville Jan. 25.
Following a suicide call that had occurred during the night, Lieutenant Peak, who was a First Sergeant at the time of the incident, made an extra effort to ensure the elderly wife of the victim was cared for and secure.
.
"It was determined that the victim was survived by his elderly wife who was in the advanced stages of dementia and was unable to care for herself.  She had no children, and the only other next-of-kin lived in another state and was terminally ill," police said in a press release.
.
Lieutenant Peak immediately contacted the Prince William Area Agency on Aging and Adult Protective Services, who needed the woman transferred to Prince William Hospital so that she could get in-home nursing. The officer, whose shift had ended, volunteered to take her and remained by her side throughout the entire process.
.
"He then took her home and ensured a nurse was in place before he left," police said. "He exercised care and compassion and showed his knowledge of resources available to assist members of the community."
