Following an investigation of the March 30th fire, which consumed a house in the 16300 block of Poplar Hill Road in Haymarket, Fire & Rescue officials said the residents are safe and uninjured, but four pets were not recovered.

"We have been advised one dog survived the fire and one dog and three cats are missing," Assistant Chief Matt Smolsky said. " The missing four animals have believed to be lost in the fire."

By the time crews arrived on the scene, the single story, single family home was fully involved; vehicles on the property were also damaged.

"Firefighters were informed that all occupants were safely out of the home as they commenced defensive operations," Communications Specialist Kim Y. Hylander said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

"We have investigators on the scene today continuing the investigation," Smolsky said. "A significant loss such as this often takes longer to determine the cause due to the amount of damage."
