Alvey Elementary Principal Defends SACC Numbers

Alvey Elementary Principal Candace Rotruck said their summer school age child care program was in compliance, despite being cited by the Virginia Department of Social Services Aug. 14. for operating over the program's  licensed capacity.

The VDSS said four staff members were found caring for 71 children while the facility is only permitted 60.

In a letter addressed to parents who have children enrolled in the program, Rotruck explained that adequate staff was on hand to supervise the 71 children who were present in the full gymnasium. She said the technical violation came as a result of incomplete paperwork, not inadequate staffing.

"The violation was issued because the program contractor, Minnieland, did not have the appropriate waiver reflecting that the full gym was being used in place of a smaller area with capacity for fewer children," Rotruck said.

If Prince William County Schools had been aware of the procedural violation following the inspection, she said they would have communicated the situation to parents.

"After learning of the issue this week, we determined that the DSS violation was never reported by Minnieland’s on-site director along the established chain to its Corporate Office and ultimately to PWCS," she said. "We have since been assured that Minnieland is working to resolve its internal communication breakdown and to keep PWCS informed of even the most minor problems." яндекс

According to PWCS Director of Communications Services Philip B. Kavits, the article published Sept. 3 by Haymarketbeat.com detailing the VDSS inspection report prompted a letter to parents.
