bearhitscarA Warrenton woman, traveling on Route 28 in Manassas Tuesday evening, accidentally struck a bear who ran across the road.

According to the driver, a Prince William County teacher, at 8:15 p.m. the bear had entered the roadway from the darkness of the 234 bypass overpass.

"I was traveling about 40 mph; the bear came out into the road right in front of me," she said. "I had a second to register what he was before I hit him."

She said the bear was not killed on impact.

"The police responded to my call very quickly, and then went to find the bear since he wasn't in the road. He was very badly injured next to the fence around the old farm house," she said.

Police euthanized the young bear, which was estimated to weigh 150 lbs.

The woman, who was uninjured, was traveling alone.

"The whole front of my car was damaged, but I didn't hit him hard enough for my airbags to deploy."
