Bristow Parents Charged with Felony Child Abuse

Prince William County Police charged Matthew and Amy Kathleen Sweeney of 12900 block of Ness Hollow Court in Bristow after their 8-year-old son was found to have been abused by his parents.

Police responded to a call at the the 9200 block of Glen Meadow Lane in Bristow for a found child on July 18 at 12:48 a.m.

"The caller reported to police that the victim, an 8 year-old-boy, had rang their doorbell and appeared to be lost. Fire & Rescue were called to check on the child who appeared to have severe bruising all over his body consistent with physical abuse," said Police Public Information Officer Jonathan Perok.

According to Perok, at 5:30 a.m., Mrs. Sweeney contacted police to report their son missing from their residence.

"The investigation into the suspected abuse revealed that both accused, the victim’s parents, had abused the victim earlier in the day prompting the child to leave the residence," Perok said..

Upon further investigation, police discovered that the abuse has been ongoing.

Upon obtaining warrants, detectives from the Physical Abuse Unit arrested both individuals without incident and placed the child in the custody of child protective services.

Police charged both individuals with felony child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Court dates are unavailable, and both were released on $20,000 unsecured bonds.
