Bristow Woman Aides Unconscious Manassas Mall Employee

While shopping at the Manassas Mall, a Bristow woman used her medical training to help care for a Woodbridge woman who had lost consciousness Jan. 10.

Nicole Miller of Victory Lakes, witnessed a Charlotte Russe employee who had fallen unconscious. The employee, Dominique Bishop, was experiencing a symptom of anemia. However, at the time, no one knew what caused her to loss consciousness.

Miller reported the event on her Facebook page last week.

“I went to the mall this mid morning to return some stuff from Christmas. While in a store, I heard a woman scream. I looked over at the register and saw all these women standing around and one on the phone," Miller said.

Miller had taken first response and CPR training some years ago, and had refreshed her training through her involvement with her son’s Boy Scout troop. When, she realized the people surrounding Bishop seemed unsure how to help her, Miller decided to assist.

“All had looks of panic on their faces. While the manager was on the phone, talking to 911, the other co-worker wasn't quite sure what to do,” Miller said.

Miller sat beside Bishop, who went in and out of consciousness. She assessed that Bishop’s pulse and breath were shallow, so with the assistance of others she turned Bishop on her side. Miller then continued to check Bishop’s pulse and comfort her, telling her that help was on the way.

Next, Miller asked Bishop some relevant health questions, while instructing the other employees to remain calm. She knew anxiety of others could negatively affect the patient, if she were to hear them. Meanwhile, she asked the store employees to keep an eye on her three year-old son, so she could focus her attention on Bishop until the medics arrived.

Once they arrived, Miller and her son sat in her car in the parking lot, watching and praying that the woman would make a full recovery.

Bishop, who is a shift manager at Charlotte Russe in Manassas, explained the circumstances of her loss of consciousness.

“I fainted. I have anemia, so my iron was low. I’m not too sure what had happened. I know my manager helped as well as a couple of customers,” Bishop said.

She thanked everyone who helped her that Thursday morning, saying, “I’m very grateful for everyone who was there. I’m doing a lot better now.”

Miller also called the store later to confirm that Bishop was recovering, and received a big thank you from the staff.

Miller remained reluctant to take credit, and only shared the story after her friends relayed the information of the event. For her part, she was just happy to have been there to help.

“I thanked God for letting me be at the right place at the right time,” she said.
