free_comicAt their annual Free Comic Book Day celebration May 7 at Comics and Gaming in Gainesville, the shop wants to give away 10,000 comics to local fans.

"I love FCBD because it an experience for the whole family to share together," owner Thomas Chillemi said.

Chillemi said his store will have 10,000 copies of 50 titles to give away, including special FCBD editions of "Archie #1," "Civil War II: Avengers #1," "ROM #0," "Suicide Squad #1," "Valiant 4001 A.D.," "DC Superhero Girls #1," "Doctor Who: Four Doctors Special," and "Bongo Comics Free-For-All."

A complete list of the free comic books can be found here.

"We will be having out annual block party for FCBD," he said.  "There will be refreshments from Toný's Pizza in Haymarket and a Moonbounce."

FCBD will also feature a sidewalk sale with over 100 long boxes of comics on sale which is 30,000+ back issues to choose from.

Free Comic Book Day, which traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in May, was launched in 2001.

"The Gainesville store has been doing Free Comic Book since 2007;  each year we have been able to reach a larger audience than the previous year," Chillemi said. "I've been supporting FCBD since 2001, the year it began!"

He said the Hero Initiative will also be represented at Free Comic Book Day. The Hero Initiative is a not-for-profit consortium of comic publishers who help provide a financial security for comic creators.

“Hero Initiative is a much needed organization for the pioneers that have made this industry so special,” he said.  “The work Hero Initiative is doing is both impactful and incredible.  I’m glad to be able to support them and hope this coming weekend is the first of many events with the organization.”

This year, the FCBD event is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. The store is located 7at 556 Gardner Park Drive.

The sidewalk sale will continue in Comic and Gaming's game center (across from the shop) on Sunday.
