Family Dog Saves Nokesville Residents from Property Fire

A Nokesville dog alerted its owners of a garage fire Monday morning, possibly saving the lives of its family members.

Prince William Fire and Rescue units were dispatched to a structure fire located at the 1400 block of Fitzwater Drive, Jan. 26 at approximately 2 a.m. Upon arrival, fire and rescue crews found a detached garage fully involved in the fire that had not yet spread to the house.

"Firefighters proceeded to attack and extinguish the fire with no extension to the home or adjacent buildings," Communications Specialist Kim Hylander said in a release.

No injuries were reported.

The family was alerted to the fire when their family dog repeatedly signaled to go outside.

"As the owner approached the door, he noticed the garage engulfed in flames and immediately called 911," Hylander said.

According to the Fire Marshal's Office, the garage housed numerous items including equipment and a vehicle. The total loss is estimated at $150,000 in damages.

The fire originated in the garage, but the cause in undetermined.
