Posted

Residents of Western Prince William County had to contend with a number of weather-related issues today, including sink holes, washed-out roads, and school bus delays. However, residents are not out of the woods quite yet.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for May 23 at 4:07 a.m until 10:00 a.m.

NWS is reporting more showers are likely and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight Wednesday, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between midnight and 3 a.m. These storms could produce some heavy rain to add to the totals, perhaps a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible during thunderstorms.

For Wednesday, NWS indicates a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms likely after 10 a.m., Wednesday with patchy fog before 8 a.m. Later, it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 78. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. There is also a 50 percent chance of thunder showers on Thursday.

Throughout Tuesday, a number of roads were closed throughout Nokesville, Bristow and Haymarket for flooding. Fire officials reported that the sink hole at Aden Road at Misty Creek is still awaiting repair.

UPDATE 8:00 p.m.: Although the National Weather Service Flash Flood Warning has expired for Western Prince William County, NWS warns that excessive runoff from continual rain can cause flooding of small creeks and streams. Central Prince William County remains in a Flash Flood Warning until 10:45 p.m.

UPDATE 5:00 a.m.: At 1:31 a.m., fire units were dispatched to perform a swift water rescue at Hornbaker Road and Nokesvile Road. A red Integra was stuck in high water, but was pulled out by a tow truck. No injuries were reported.

According to Northern Virginia Fire Buffs, "Even though no action was needed, all units responded and arrived on scene quickly within minutes and advised of the on-scene situation."
