Freeze Warning Issued for Northern Virginia

The National Weather Service has issued an overnight freeze warning for the Northern Virginia area. Temperatures are expected to drop to the middle 20's to around 30 degrees.

The NWS warns that unprotected vegetation that are sensitive to freezing temperatures will be at serious risk for damage.

Chris Omohundro, master gardener for Prince William County, suggests covering any delicate plants, including annuals, vegetable gardens, and bulbs.

"It's more than frost; it's cold," Omohundro said. "Protect the plants by covering them with sheets, towels, or cardboard."

While new growth is especially at risk, some plants are hardy enough to weather the cold.

"Don't worry about cherry and dogwood trees," he said. "They'll be fine."

The freeze warning remains in effect from 3 a.m. until 9 a.m.
