Grant Austin Christensen, 39, of Gainesville died Tuesday night after he lost control of his vehicle following a two-car collision on Route 29/Lee Highway in Gainesville, and crashed it into a concrete pillar.
Investigators from the Crash Investigation Unit responded to the area of Lee Highway near the I-66 overpass in Gainesville (20155) to investigate a vehicle crash at 9:54 p.m. Oct. 14.
The investigation revealed that the driver of a 2011 GMC Denali was making a right turn onto Lee Highway from Linton Hall Road when the vehicle struck a 1992 Honda Accord making a left onto Lee Highway.
“Following that collision, the driver of the Denali continued northbound on Lee Highway at a high rate of speed and eventually lost control. At one point, the vehicle became airborne and struck a concrete pillar to the I-66 overpass,” said Prince William Police spokesperson Officer Jonathan Perok.
Christensen was transported to an area hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. The other vehicle did remain at the scene; no injuries were reported.
According to police, speed and alcohol appear to be factors in this crash. The investigation continues.
The second driver has been identified as a 55-year-old Maryland man.
