Prince William County Police report that a Gainesville woman was shot while watching her child’s soccer game at George Hellwig Memorial Park along Bristow Road in Manassas Sunday just after 5 p.m.

“The victim, a 43-year old woman of Gainesville, reported to police that she was sitting in a chair watching her child’s soccer game, when she felt a sharp pain to her right thigh," Police spokesperson Officer Jonathan Perok. "At that time, the victim reportedly believed she was struck with a BB or other type projectile."

The victim went to an area hospital for treatment where medical staff determined that she was struck by a small caliber bullet, possibly a .22 round.

"No gunshot was ever heard, and no one at the game reported seeing anyone with a weapon," Perok said.

The vicitim’s injury was not life-threatening, but Perok said police are continuing their investigation into this matter, which they are calling a "reckless handling of a firearm."
