Gas Prices Rise Slightly in Region

Summer is filled with traditions: warm weather, family outings, and higher gas prices. This summer is no exception.

After several months of falling gas prices, Western Prince William County is seeing price increases that are typical of the summer season and increased travel.

“Crude oil, and in turn gas prices, gained upward momentum this week, leaving many to wonder if we have seen the summer low for 2012.  Analysts believe we very well may have, as they now project prices will hover close to where they are now or just a bit higher, barring any hurricane or international oil disruptions in the coming months, both of which would send prices higher quickly,” said Martha M. Meade, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic.

According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, gas prices began to rise slightly higher this week, putting an end to a streak of 78 days which saw prices gradually fall from $3.91 per gallon on April 16 to $3.33 per gallon on July 3.

With crude oil prices falling over the last month, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that regular gasoline retail prices for the third quarter of 2012 will reach $3.39 per gallon.

According to the EIA Short Term Energy Outlook, "EIA expects regular gasoline retail prices, which averaged $3.53 per gallon in 2011, to average $3.49 per gallon in 2012 and $3.28 per gallon in 2013,"
