According to Department of Fire & Rescue Communications Specialist Kim Y. Hylander, the fire extended from the rear deck into the first floor living areas and into the attic.

"A resident and two firefighters suffered injuries while extinguishing the fire," she said.

The preliminary estimate for fire loss is $240.000.

"Smoke alarms did alert once smoke migrated into the dwelling," she said.

Original Story:

The Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue responded to the 8500 block of Trade Wind Court in Bristow for a two-story house fire Wednesday afternoon.

According to Battalion Chief John Shiflett, the fire consumed the back of the house. He said this incident was not a rescue mission as the homeowner, a senior man, exited the structure on his own.

Shiflett said crews put out the fire within 20 minutes of arrival; they remained on the scene to secure the scene and check for hot spots.

“It was a two-story house fire that started in the rear of the structure," he said. "There was one injured person who was treated on the scene."

The homeowner, who was the only one in the residence, escaped with minor injuries.

Deborah Pfeiffer, a critical stress manager-in-training, counseled the man, whom she said had minor burns on his arm from trying to put out the fire.

Pfeiffer was driving through the neighborhood when she saw smoke coming from the back of the house.

EMT personnel worked out of the garage of neighbor Lisa Matthews.

“We saw smoke coming out the back of the house and we heard three booms," she said.

Eyewitnesses on the scene said that Fire & Rescue units arrived within minutes. The team included approximately 20 fire, rescue, EMT and police personnel from the Nokesville, Stonewall and City of Manassas departments.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by fire investigators from the Fire Marshal’s office.
