Homes for Our Troops (HOFT) will be building a home for Sgt. Steven Curry in Nokesville and will be kicking off the project with an opening event April 18 at 11 a.m. at the Nokesville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Station 5 Banquet Hall on Marsteller Drive.

“There will be several speakers, including Sgt. Curry. After the ceremony, attendees are welcome to find out more about HFOT and how they can get involved with the project,” HFOT Marketing Coordinator Teresa Franco Verity said.

In order to be eligible for a home from HFOT, the veteran must be approved for the Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant by the Veterans Administration. They have to apply to HFOT and must meet requirements including being injured in combat or in support of combat operations after 9/11; the veteran must be retired or in the retirement process, and they must pass a crime and credit check. Once selected, a location for the home is decided upon.

“The Veteran chooses the area they would like to live in. They often consider proximity to family and medical systems, school systems, jobs and climate. The HFOT land team identifies and evaluates viable parcels that are then presented to the Veteran for review and selection,” Verity said.

Sgt. Curry is a medically retired army sergeant that suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from an explosion that also resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee.

He currently lives with his wife and two children in a multistory home and has to battle stairs frequently. The new home will be single-level and will be wheelchair accessible. This will shorten the 18 plus hours that Curry has to wear his prosthetic leg every day and allow him to do more things around the house.

“The days of jumping and swinging into and out of the shower would be over. I would be able to help cook, clean, and take care of my children all from the safety of my wheelchair,” Curry said.

With the project, HFOT hopes to help him without having to be worry about the burdens of a monthly mortgage.

“Our goal is for Sgt. Steven Curry to have a safe, comfortable place to live where he can regain his independence while living at home,” Verity said, “This will allow him to spend more time with his family and pursue other aspirations, allowing him to rebuild his life.”

More information about getting involved in the project or donating to the organization can be found at the Homes for Our Troops website at www.hfotusa.org.

Homes for Our Troops is a privately funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that works toward providing mortgage-free, specially adapted homes for severely injured Veterans of post 9/11. To date, HFOT has built 185 homes and currently has 51 projects underway across the nation.
