fcsdFauquier County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control responded to investigate an incident of a horse killed after falling from a trailer while traveling from Prince William County last weekend.

At approximately 1 p.m. Sept, 26 , citizens reported a dead horse on the side of Elk Run Road and Sowego Road in Fauquier County.

“A worker from a farm was transporting horses from a farm in Prince William County to an event. While traveling through Fauquier on Elk Run Road at Sowego Road, a horse fell out of the trailer, the gate was not properly locked," Fauquier Information Officer James Hartman said.

According to Hartman, the horse was dragged behind the trailer for some distance before the driver, who was alone, realized the rear gate was open. He pulled over to shut the gate and discovered what happened.

He moved the horse's remains to the roadside and continued on to the event. Once at the event the horse owner was notified and responded to the scene.

“Meanwhile a passersby observed the carnage and reported to FCSO,” Hartman said.“The matter was investigated.”

Fauquier County Sheriff's Office did not say whether or not the man would be charged with a crime.
