Due to icy conditions following snow Wednesday night, many area schools are on two-hour delays with Prince William County Schools choosing to close on a Code Red.

At the School Board meeting last night, Superintendent of Schools Steven L. Walts announced that the school division would be closed Thursday to address dangerous conditions in parts of the county.

"We will be having a Code Red due to very slick icing conditions in various parts of the county," Walts said. "Even a two-hour delay would not get us passed the temperature that would manage thaws."

According to the National Weather Service, overnight temperatures were in the 20s and will remain below freezing Thursday morning.

Walts referred to his controversial decision to remain open Jan. 6,2015 despite treacherous conditions during the morning commute.

"If we go back to the famous Jan. 6 date...there then was then refreezing that extremely dangerous conditions on that day."

As the School Division grapples with the decision to close schools ahead of the start of the approaching snowstorm, school officials hope t0 stem the misleading and incorrect information that has circulated about their weather-related closing plan.

"[As of 7 a.m. Thursday,] No weather decisions have been announced yet for Friday or beyond," PWCS posted on their webpage Wedensday. "Fake information is circulating online."

PWCS formally posts messages about closings on their MyPWCS mobile app, social media sites and on PWCS-TV.

Additionally, BristowBeat.com reports only confirmed school closing information.
