Independent Scott Jacobs won exactly 15 percent of the vote with 558 votes and Democrat Eric Young took 9.3 percent with 346 votes.

Democratic candidate Eric Young conceded the election to Republican Jeanine Lawson.

In a statement, Young said,"I'd like to congratulate Jeanine.  And I'm very pleased to see so many people turn out to vote."

Original Story:

Republican Jeanine Lawson is projected to be the winner in the Special Election for Brentsville Supervisor with 76 percent of the votes and all but three precincts reporting: Victory, Buckland Mills and Burke-Nickens.

Challenger Independent Scott Jacob, so far has approximately 14.5 percent of the vote and Democrat Eric Young won 9.4 percent.

Lawson unofficially entered the race approximately one year ago, upon hearing that former Brentsville Supervisor Wallace “Wally” S. Covington would be stepping down to pursue a judgeship.

Lawson and Jacobs both sought the Republican nomination, but Jacobs was disqualified for not submitting his filing papers on time via mail to the Prince William Republican Committee according to the local party's nominating committee.

After his disqualification on September 29, Jacobs announced he would run as an independent, and Jeanine was declared the official Republican nominee by a large crowd at the party’s Mass Meeting on October 1.

Meanwhile, former Democratic Candidate Don Shaw had dropped out of the race to instead pursue a run for Virginia House Delegates of the 13th District against Republican Bob Marshall in 2015. While Chairman Harry Wiggins of the Prince William Democratic Committee initially said his party would not run another candidate, Democratic Eric Young entered the race in mid-October.

Lawson, who previously ran against Covington in 2011, entered the race having already a strong network of supporters. Lawson ran on a platform of limited growth, and only accepted campaign contributions from one developer. People also liked that Lawson spoke on behalf of transparency in government, and was very involved with the local schools, having served on the Safe School Committee.

Lawson has been a resident of the Bristow Bridlewood Community for almost 20 years. She is a wife and mother of two teenage children and a native of rural Iowa.

On election day, Lawson was supported by several high profile Republican elected officials including Congresswoman Barbara Comstock, former Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and State Senator Dick Black. Many of these elected officials spoke highly of Lawson and called her a “friend.”

She was also supported by local Republicans Chairman Pete Candland of the Board of County Supervisors, Brentsville School Board Representative Gil Trenum and Gainesville School Board Representative Alyson Satterwhite.

The Brentsville Supervisor Special Election had a higher turnout than expected, over 9 percent, especially for being held just two days before Christmas. The high turnout was probably facilitated by the extra-long campaign season.

Although Lawson and Jacobs campaigned for nearly a year, Lawson will have to run again in November to secure her seat for four more years.

The development of Stone Haven has been a divisive issue for the residents of Brentsville. Following the live debate Dec. 9, residents sympathized with Lawson’s  view of limited growth. These issues resonated with citizens apparently more than Jacob’s pro-business stance and Young’s stance that by not taking developer money, he was the most transparent of the three.
