Local Supermarkets Running Low on Storm Essentials

Supermarkets in Bristow and Gainesville remained mostly stocked late Sunday afternoon as some residents rushed to buy some last minute items before the storm. However, some key storm supplies were dwindling.

Giant Supermarket in the Virginia Gateway Shopping Center in Gainesville carried most of their regular stock of items; however, there were no gallon jugs of water; however, bottled water and larger containers for water coolers were still in supply.

A Giant employee said that a water delivery is scheduled for Sunday night, unless the warehouse is running low. Giant was short on a few other items too, such as can goods, crackers and some snack chips.

The situation was similar at the Bristow Center Harris Teeter. Shelves, once stocked with fresh water, were more than half empty and potato chips and nachos were in low supply. The supermarket was also out of C and D batteries.

A Harris Teeter employee said it was a busy week, and people were stocking up on the usual items like bread and water, and that they were always getting new deliveries in.

One Bristow couple was doing their weekly shopping at Harris Teeter, and said they were not too concerned about being stuck inside due to Hurricane Sandy.

“It’s just rain the way I see it, and there’s no need to buy 24 packs of toilet paper,” said Kevin Maddon. “We’re not going to be housebound for a week.”

However, his wife, Stephanie, said they did take some precautions, such as filling up their bath with water in case the electricity goes out.

“It looks like vintage Soviet Union,” Kevin Maddon said of the way some people were responding to the storm.

However, most who were concerned about the storm, must have hit the shopping centers earlier in the week. By Sunday there were few people still shopping, and no long lines at the registers.
