fireandrescue2-240x180Fire and rescue units evacuated 67 residents from two apartment buildings in the 10900 block of Coverstone Drive in Manassas following a partial collapse of one building's roof.

Fire and rescue unit were dispatched to the complex at approximately 12:30 a.m. Sunday for reports of residents trapped in the structure.

"Upon arrival, fire and rescue crews observed two apartments, one with partial collapse and the other building showing signs of a potential collapse,"Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue Communications Specialist Kim Y. Hylander said. "Initial reports indicated residents were trapped due the location of the collapse, a center portion of the building which leads to an exit."

No injuries to residents were reported; one firefighter that sustained a facial cut.

Each building housed 12 units each.

"Arrangements are currently being made to shelter approximately 67 people displaced by the building collapse," Hylander said.

Officials have determined that the cause of the collapse was the recent snowfall of approximately 28 inches of snowfall during the last 36 hours.

“Roof collapses occur during extreme weather, in this incident it was due to the weight of the snow," Fire and Rescue Chief Kevin McGee.

Building officials are on the scene completing their investigation of the incident.
