Updated Sept. 17:

D.C. Metropolitan Police now believe there was only the one shooter.

Lanier said when police arrived within minutes of receiving a call, there were already people deceased at the Navy Yard.

“Certainly was one of the worst things we’ve seen in Washington D.C.,” said Lanier, explaining that after officers arrived around 8:20, they saw “multiple victims” and “gun fire still going on.”

Lanier said that her officers did shoot down the gunman after “multiple engagements” with officers.

“No question he would have kept shooting,” Lanier said.

Additionally, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray informed citizens that the death toll has now risen to 13 dead, including the shooter, after another person died at Washington Hospital since his last briefing.

Gray said they will not be releasing the names of the victims, saying, “We don’t even know the identities of the victims at this stage.”

For those individuals for whom they have identified, Gray said they will make sure to contact loved ones and family members before names are publically released.

Gray said the FBI is not calling the incident terrorism at this point.

“We don’t know what the motive is at this stage. We don’t have any reason at this stage to suspect terrorism, but it certainly hasn’t been ruled out,” Grey said.

D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton said they consider the attack on their city also an attack on our country.

Holmes said the Senate is on lockdown, and the House of Representatives is not, only because they are not in session today.

Due to the Navy Yard shootings, the Washington Nationals game is being postponed tentatively until Tuesday at 1 p.m. People are being asked to not travel into D.C. if they can avoid it.
