The Virginia Department of Transportation announced a new Aden Road bridge, over the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Nokesville, will open to one-lane traffic Dec. 7.

The detour on Marsteller Drive has been lifted.

The crossing has been closed since May 2015 to initially accommodate the repair of the historic 134-year-old wrought-iron truss bridge.

"VDOT originally planned to repair the truss bridge and reopen it for northbound use, however, upon removal, the bridge showed substantial structural deficiencies," VDOT Senior Public Affairs Officer Ellen Kamilakis said. "The extensive repairs needed to return the truss bridge to service for vehicles would also remove it from the National Register of Historic Places."

VDOT is working with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and the community to preserve the old truss bridge.

VDOT estimates Aden Road currently carries about 2,800 vehicles a day and is projected to increase to 4,900 by 2036.

According to VDOT, the bridge was constructed  in 1882 for the Keystone Bridge Company; the bridge was purchased in the early 1900s and moved to Aden Road by Norfolk Southern, who transferred ownership to VDOT in 2014.
