NWS Extends Heat Advisory, Storms Possible Thursday Night

Posted

While temperature continue to climb throughout Wednesday, the National Weather Service has extended the Heat Advisory to Thursday Evening.

NWS warns that the area will experience temperatures in the mid to high 90′s with heat index values from 100 to 105 degrees, possibly bringing the hottest weather that Prince William County has seen this year. The agency reports that the heat index will remain above 80 degrees overnight.

Furthermore, showers and thunderstorms that could produce locally damaging wind gusts are possible Thursday night ahead of a cold front on Friday.

NWS suggests that residents take precautions if spending time outdoors, including:

  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water
  • Dress in lightweight and loose fitting clothes
  • Make attempts to remain inside in air-conditioning
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat stroke
  • Limit physical activities
  • Check in on relatives and neighbors

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.
