NWS Issues Excessive Heat Warning for Saturday

Avoid prolonged periods in the sun on Wednesday. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 90's, while the heat index may soar to over 100 degrees. The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the area from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday. The service warns that residents will experience temperatures from the mid to upper 90s with heat index values up to 110 degrees. "An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously high temperatures will occur. The combination of extreme temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are expected," NWS said. Experts suggests that residents take precautions if spending time outdoors, including:
  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water
  • Dress in lightweight and loose-fitting clothes
  • Make attempts to remain inside in air-conditioning
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat stroke
  • Limit physical activities
  • Check in on relatives and neighbors

"As has been the case for the past few days, the region remains on the western periphery of surface high pressure and under broad," a forecaster said. "Steady warm air and moisture advection will result in the warmest day from this week along with dew points in the mid to upper 70s."

While residents will see slightly cooler temperatures on Sunday, an Excessive Heat Watch was also issued from noon to 8 p.m.
