While the area will avoid most of Hurricane Arthur, the National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch from 1 p.m. Thursday until 2 a.m. Friday.

According to the weather service, tropical moisture will remain over the area through most of tonight bringing showers and thunderstorms. The region will see the heaviest precipitation late this afternoon through late this evening.

“Rainfall rates in heavier showers and thunderstorms may exceed 2 inches per hour.” they said. “In targeted areas that receive torrential rain for longer than 30 minutes flash flooding may begin quickly and in a very localized area.”

Officials warn residents to avoid low areas that may flood and not to cross roads that are flooded.

“The best chance for the heavier thunderstorms will be this afternoon and early evening for locations west of the Blue Ridge Mountains,” a NWS forecaster said. “Drier air will move in behind the cold front across these areas allowing for conditions to improve tonight.”
