Organizers Announce Changes for Nokesville Day Parade

The Nokesville-Bristow Ruritans, organizers of the Nokesville Day parade, announced changes to the May 18 celebration.

While the parade route has not been finalized, the Nokesville-Bristow Ruritans are considering changing the route to start at Nokes Street by the Nokesville Church of the Brethren and end at Brentsville High School.

"By going this route, it will make it easier for the parade participants to line up in a line, and for those who need transportation, they can have their buses and horse trailers parked at the high school for easier transition," they said.

The Ruritans will announce the final route as the event approaches.

The plan is for the Nokesville Day Festival to run the entire street of Fitzwater Drive from Route 28 to Aden Road. Prince William County Police will close the road for the day.

Parade participants will also not be permitted to throw candy from their vehicles during the parade.

"We have heard some feedback about the candy being thrown from the vehicles in the last couple years," the organization said in a statement. "Due to the safety of the children and parade participants, we are no longer allowing candies to be thrown from the vehicles."

The organizers have instructed participants to walk along the parade route and distribute candy and literature  by hand to residents.

"It's a hazard for the children to run out in the streets to pick up the candies, and it's a hazard for those people and animals walking in the parade to step on these things," they said.  "We will enforce it this year, and if any parade participants are throwing candies from the vehicles, they will be subject to a $100 fine."
