VDOT announced the Tuesday into Wednesday closures will include:
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Eastbound right lane closed at Fairfax County Parkway interchange (Exit 55)
8 to 10 p.m. – Two right eastbound lanes closed just beyond the Route 50 (Exit 57) overpass. Left lane will remain open, right shoulder “X” lane will be open to traffic
10 to midnight – All regular eastbound lanes will be closed just beyond Route 50, eastbound right shoulder “X” lane will remain open to traffic. One westbound lane just before the Route 50 overpass will be closed.
Midnight to 5 a.m. – Full EB and WB closures of up to 30 minutes each at Route 50 interchange
"The Wednesday, Feb. 11 into Thursday, Feb. 12 full closures of up to 30 minutes each on westbound I-66 between Route 7 (Exit 66) and the Capital Beltway (Exit 64) will still occur as scheduled between midnight and 5 a.m. No other lane closures are scheduled at that location Wednesday night," VDOT said.
Updated: Feb. 9, 12 p.m.
The Virginia Department of Transportation has postponed lane closures on I-66 East and West until Tuesday Feb. 10, due to the forecast calling for rain and possible wintry mix tonight.
Original Story:
This week brings more intermittent lane closures on I-66 as the Virginia Department of Transportation continues to install gantries. "All lanes of Interstate 66 in both directions will close intermittently between midnight and 5 a.m. Monday, February 9 and all lanes of westbound I-66 between midnight and 5 a.m. Wednesday, February 11 for the installation of gantries," VDOT spokesperson Mike Murphy said. "Each closure will last up to 30 minutes." Murphy said Monday into Tuesday closures will occur at the Route 50 interchange (Exit 57) and the Wednesday into Thursday closures will occur on westbound I-66 between Route 7 (Exit 66) and the Capital Beltway (Exit 64). "Prior to the full intermittent closures, there will be lane closures for crane and stage construction," he said. "On eastbound 66,the two left lanes will be closed from 8 p.m. to midnight, during which the right shoulder will be open to traffic. On westbound 66, two lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to midnight." VDOT announced that they will post message signs in advance of the work so that motorists can plan alternate
routes.
“The closures are part of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s ongoing effort to install 36 new gantries as part of the I-66 Active Traffic Management System (ATMS),” VDOT said. “The first gantry went up in mid-November on I-66 East just before Route 28.”
Residents can go to the VDOT website for more information on the project.
The traffic system is scheduled to begin operating between Route 29 in Centreville and the Capital Beltway in mid-summer 2015.
