Jefferson St. Bridge Work to Periodically Close I-66

i66overpassclosureStarting this week, eastbound and westbound lanes of I-66 will periodically close after 10:30 p.m. to accommodate the removal of steel from the Jefferson Street Bridge. According to an announcement by Shirley Contracting, there will be periods when both lanes will be closed. "There will be single lane closures on EB and/or WB depending on what portion of the removal process we are in," they said. "In addition there will be periodic stoppages of the remaining open lane while we remove the steel element itself that is above that lane." Shirley Contracting expects these stoppages not to exceed 20 minutes for each occurrence. "The stoppages can’t start until 10:30 p.m. at night on the EB side of I-66 and midnight on the WB side of I-66," they said. The closure of the I-66 overpass at Jefferson Street/Old Carolina Road is part of the I-66 renovation that will add an HOV and one regular lane between Gainesville and Haymarket. The Virginia Department of Transportation is reconstructing overpasses at Catharpin Road and Old Carolina Road/S. Jefferson Street with 10-foot shared-use paths. VDOT expects the project to be completed in August 2016. More detailed information about this project is available on the VDOT website at http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/northernvirginia/i-66_widening.asp.
