Police Concerned about Rumors of Abduction Attempts

Police are concerned about the recent spread of misinformation regarding strangers approaching children at bus stops in the Gainesville area.

On Friday, an individual circulated a memo warning Virginia Oaks residents about another abduction attempt.

"This morning a child was almost abducted from a bus stop in Virginia Oaks, but the parents acted quickly and the child is safe," the message said.

The memo also described the vehicle, the driver and two passengers who allegedly approached the child.

Like the Sept. 13 incident, which police deemed to be a hoax, they dismissed this report.

"We haven’t had an attempted abduction," police spokesman Jonathan Perok said. " has been putting out unconfirmed incidents."

According to police, the only potential abduction attempt was the incident involving a young girl who was approached by an unknown individual in a dark blue car with dark-tinted windows at Marsteller Middle School in Bristow.
