april18accident1A SUV struck a two to three-year-old female child Saturday at 8:19 p.m., closing Sudley Manor Drive in Bristow for hours.

The child, whose name was not released, was air lifted from Marsteller Middle School.

"Her condition is improving. no longer critical," police spokesperson Officer Jonathan Perok said.

According to Bristow resident Ian Campbell, who was in the car behind the vehicle that struck the child, the SUV was traveling south at the same speed as he was, 35 miles per hour. He surmised that the driver probably did not have time to respond to the child in the road.

Campbell called 911 after the incident and provided police with a statement. He told police that a two-foot-tall toddler crossed the median from the left side of the road.

“It looked like the kid had already gotten across the road and was trying to run back,” Campbell said.

Perok said the girl was crossing the street, heading back toward the area of her residence on the right side of Sudley Manor Drive.

The driver of the SUV has not been charged or cited as the incident is under investigation.

Nokesville Volunteer Fire & Rescue personnel tended to the little girl at the scene.

"The child cried when they loaded her into the ambulance," Campbell said.
